An
acid reflux diet typically restricts the intake of certain foods that are known to increase stomach acid. Some people even claim that there are foods that âcureâ the syndrome.
You can currently find for sale acid reflux diet books, alongside other popular diets and cookbooks. One author states that apples âcuredâ his acid reflux. He is now selling a report in which he details âthree natural remediesâ for acid reflux.
These are supposed to be foods that cured his acid reflux. He does admit, however, that they may not work for everyone. In our opinion, it may be more effective in the long run to design your own acid reflux diet, using a food and symptoms diary to record what foods seem to trigger symptoms.
Natural remedies for acid reflux include changing the foods you commonly eat and even when you eat, how much you eat, and in what circumstances you eat. Such changes, believe it or not, may be effective for reducing symptoms of acid reflux.
Most doctors and other healthcare professionals recommend that in order to control symptoms, an
acid reflux diet should exclude certain foods that are known to increase stomach acid. Tomatoes and citrus fruits, for example, are highly acidic. So is chocolate. And fried or fatty foods can also increase stomach acid and worsen symptoms.
You may think that an acid reflux diet must be bland, but while some spices trigger symptoms, some commonly used cooking herbs are considered natural remedies for acid reflux.
Changing from garlic and chili powder to ginger, fennel seed and turmeric may help. Ginger, fennel seed and turmeric were used in traditional medicine to treat indigestion and heartburn. Modern herbalists have combined some of these âherbs for heartburnâ to create natural remedies for acid reflux.
In addition to following an acid reflux diet that limits highly acidic foods, experts say that eating less than three hours before bedtime increases the likelihood that you will have nighttime symptoms.
This is because lying down after eating allows gravity to work against you and makes it easier for stomach acid to creep up into the esophagus. Knowing this, some companies sell wedge-type pillows calling them natural remedies for acid reflux, but some doctors who specialize in treating the syndrome maintain that these pillows may actually worsen symptoms by âfoldingâ the stomach.
These doctors recommend raising the head of the bed (with blocks, for example) 6 inches higher than the foot of the bed, so that gravity can still help keep acid in your stomach, without âfoldingâ and creating extra pressure on the stomach.
If it isnât what you eat or when you eat, it could be how much you eat. An effective acid reflux diet plan may include several small meals every few hours throughout the day, rather than one or two large meals. The more food that is in the stomach, the more likely that acid will reflux.
Another one of the often suggested natural remedies for acid reflux is simply losing some weight. Extra pounds put extra pressure on the stomach and more acid creeps up. At night, this can lead to sleep disturbances, coughing, snoring and even sleep apnea.
Following an acid reflux diet plan that is low in fatty and fried foods and calls for meals every couple of hours is not only one of the effective natural remedies for acid reflux, but it could help you lose weight since it primes the metabolism.
Doctors typically recommend antacids or proton pump inhibitors, at least for short-term use, to prevent or neutralize stomach acid. There are a number of herbal and botanical products that may do the some thing.
For example, mangosteen juice (a health drink), taken before meals, effectively dilutes stomach acid and may be considered one of the natural remedies for acid reflux. An acid reflux diet alone may not be enough. If not treated, acid reflux can lead to damage of the esophageal lining, which can lead to esophageal cancer.
Components of the mangosteen have been shown to reduce inflammation and actually prevent the formation of cancerous tumors in laboratory studies. Tell your doctor about which acid reflux diet and what natural remedies for acid reflux you are using and get regular check-ups, even if your symptoms seem to be under control.

Having just read the famous 'French Women Don't Get Fat', I'm inspired. French women don't go to gyms. They don't work out with a trainer. They don't even do aerobics in the cover of their own homes.
French paradox?
After reading the book, I don't think so.
Among other things, French women find simple ways to incorporate more exercise and movement into their day. This helps to burn more calories and keep their waists trim. So in the spirit of this, here are 5 tips to build more exercise into your life (and forget the gym :o)
#1) Take the stairs.
We here it all the time but it's true. Stair walking not only burns mega calories but it gives you an amazing back end. You don't have to do 10 flights at once. But whenever you have the option to take the elevator up 2 or 3 floors or to take the stairs - choose the stairs.
#2) Walk your dog.
No, don't take him to the park and just stand there with the other dog owners - walk him! He'll appreciate it and you'll appreciate the looser feel of your pants after a few months - just from making this small change.
#3) Forget the gym - clean your house.
I used to hate cleaning my house. So boring - and it actually made me sweat so that was uncomfortable. Then one day I finally got a clue and realized that cleaning my house was a great way to get my exercise. Instead of going to the gym (and then stressing when I came home since my house was messy), I decided to bring out the vacuum and sweat with that instead. Now I not only have a 'workout' but I also have a clean house. 2 birds with one stone.
#4) Take a commercial break.
Instead of sitting on your couch watching the latest commercial on how they get that soft flowing caramel inside the chocolate bar, get up and do something during the commercials. Do some sit-ups or push ups. Walk around your house. Start a load of laundry. Do some squats or lunges. Every little bit helps in the calorie burning game - and you won't even miss the commercials!
#5) Be 'Movement Aware'
Just by being aware of how much movement you're doing, you'll find ways throughout your day to incorporate exercise into your routine. Instead of bending at the waist to unload the dishwasher, why not squat and bring your legs into it. Instead of looking for the nearest parking spot to the grocery store, why not park far away and walk?
If you pay attention, you'll see tons of little ways to bring more movement into your daily life that won't cost you anything but extra calories.
Try these tips and chances are you'll notice looser pants in a few months - all without sweating it out hours in a gym.

Art therapy can work in any medium and is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic expression can help people to develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, help to resolve conflict or problems, increase self esteem and self awareness, achieve insight and in turn these will help to reduce stress and goes a long way toward stress management. Art therapists are skilled in the application of several different modes of art including drawing, painting, sculpting, along with other media for assessment and treatment. While art therapy is its own field and therapists are masters level professionals it is something that you can practice on your own, whenever and wherever you feel the need.
Many find that using art therapy is both cathartic and inspirational. Whether it is painting, drawing or some other method creating art can help you to manage or relieve stress in more ways than one. During the creative process you can take your mind of what it is that is stressing you, being in the moment and the flow of the art is very engaging and can bring you to an almost meditative state. The finished product is rewarding since it is something that you created. Having a hobby or something that you do for yourself can go along way toward bringing a sense of balance to your life and help with stress management. Often just putting your problems out there on paper, as a clay model or whatever making them external makes them easier to deal with and you have the emotional satisfaction of having created something that is all your own. Art is a window into human emotion, thought, expression and personality. Too much stress can cause you to lose touch with your true thoughts and feelings and artistic expression can help you to get them back. Art is a way of healing.

Stress is necessary. It occurs as a normal part of life in response to changes, and real or perceived threats. Stress is also helpful in the face of a threat or challenge. Stress is harmful and can be dangerous when the emotional, physical and psychological reactions do not abate or return to normal. Since stress is subjective and affects everyone differently taking a holistic approach to stress management is most beneficial. Many practices used in holistic medicine today are based on Ancient Healing Ways. Practitioners of naturopathy, homeopathy and allopathic medicine believe that through reclaiming the old ways and connecting you with nature and your own innate being that your life will be fulfilled with wisdom, balance and meaning. Most of this basis is in energy. Some forms of ancient healing have been used regularly through the times, and some are gaining in popularity and widespread use by the western world as more information and research is available and holistic practices are becoming more widely accepted.
Ayurveda for instance has been practiced in India for thousands of years. It is described as a science of life. Writings about this type of practice exist from six thousand years ago but it is believed to have been in practice even longer than that. There are those that say it has been around since the dawn of time because our very existence is governed by nature. Aromatherapy is one practice used in Ayurveda. For adults with Down syndrome it is important to take care of their health and well-being. It is imperative for adults with Down syndrome treat problems as quickly as they arise; participate in preventive healthcare and health screenings as well as living a healthy lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and social and creative interactions.
Obesity is more common in adults with Down syndrome. Research has shown that they have a basal metabolic rate that is slower than that of the average adult. The average adult with Down syndrome burns 200 to 300 calories less per day than the non-Downs adults. Simply cutting calories tends to result in nutritional deficiencies for the Downs adults so it is imperative that they burn an extra 200 to 300 calories per day to prevent gaining weight and obesity.
Many adults with Down syndrome were born with congenital heart defects that required surgery to treat them. In some, the defect cannot be treated with surgery so exercise is contraindicated. There is a condition in which the vertebraes are too flexible in the neck and spine. In these cases, exercise is also prohibited. It can be difficult for these adults to exercise and not gain weight because of their ongoing health issues.
Sleep apnea is common in adults with Down syndrome. It has been reported that many Downs adults sleep bent at the waist with their head on their legs. This can be a potential problem with getting adequate sleep and can aggravate sleep apnea. Also common is snoring, restless sleeping, and irregular breathing patterns during sleep. Due to sleep difficulties, many adults with Down syndrome experience tiredness and somnolence during the daytime hours.
Depression has been associated with a decrease in the immune system and an overall decrease in physical health. Enhancing the social interaction and creativity of an adult with Down syndrome will help combat these things. These adults need annual health screenings to address their original Downs issues as well as the health issues that can arise such as problems with skin, hearing, eyesight, and teeth or gums.
As adults with Down syndrome get older, it is common for them to develop urinary incontinence and constipation. They are at risk for Alzheimers and orthopedic problems. It can become increasingly difficult for the Downs adult to be independent and take care of them despite the desire to be like other adults and live independent lives.
Most adults with Down syndrome can live independent and successfully healthy lives as long as there are adults who can help manage their healthcare. Both physical and mental wellbeing are important to remaining physically healthy and living longer. Despite the many adverse physical effects that occur in the adult with Down syndrome as they age, it is possible for them to be productive adults in society. Most importantly to their success is that they know that they are productive and are made to feel like they are independent. Healthy living is more than just a lack of disease.
